CMD Supports Axius Diesel Sterndrive Control System for 2009 Model Year

(Charleston, S.C.) – Axius is a new sterndrive control system with joystick docking that provides maneuverability and performance on a level never before seen in sterndrive boating applications. As the first fully intuitive sterndrive system for piloting a boat, it offers boaters new ways to enjoy their time on the water, because it makes cruising and docking as easy for the novice as it is for the experienced captain. Axius was developed by the MerCruiser division of Mercury Marine and employs SmartCraft Joystick Docking technology. The Axius control system is based on technology originally developed for the Zeus pod propulsion system by Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (a joint venture between Mercury MerCruiser and Cummins Inc.). Axius will be released introduced at Miami Boat Show in February, 2008.

A Solid Foundation

Axius uses twin, individually articulating MerCruiser® Bravo Three® diesel sterndrives with compact QSD diesel engines. Boaters will enjoy superb maneuverability and increased performance. Since Axius doesn’t require modifications to the hull, it’s an easy upgrade to a MerCruiser SeaCore® Sterndrive with features including hardcoat anodizing and an increased use of stainless steel making it perfect for saltwater environments.

Astonishing Precision

In addition to the amazingly smooth and responsive SmartCraft® Digital Throttle & Shift, Axius uses the SmartCraft Joystick Docking System, which allows for control over each drive independently. Since the drives work together but aren’t connected to each other, joystick control allows Axius-powered boats to move sideways, at an angle, or even in a circle – all with a simple touch of the joystick.

Amazingly Responsive Control

Axius also takes advantage of variable assist power steering, providing smooth lock to lock turning response. An optional autopilot system offers simplified hands-free operation.

A Proven History

Axius is another example of the CMD’s commitment to advanced engineering. From design to testing, we invest thousands of hours in the lab and on the water to ensure that our customers are enjoying the best-performing, most reliable power on the water. Across the board, Axius demonstrates improvement over traditional inboard performance. Fuel economy, range, time to plane and top speed all see dramatic improvements.

Areas of Improvement over Traditional Inboards (comparison made with gas version) :

Acceleration: 0 to plane 25% – 35% faster;

Acceleration: 0 to 30 mph 5% – 15% faster;

Fuel Economy: Average at Cruise 30% – 40% better;

Fuel Economy: Wide-Open Throttle (WOT) 20% – 30% better;

Top Speed: 20% – 25% faster.
