Azimut chooses Quantum QSB5.9-380 to power new 40

The new QSB5.9-380 engine from Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (CMD) will be the main power behind Azimut's 40 Flybridge, to be launched at Genoa Boat Show next month.

Fully electronic and based on high-pressure common rail technology, Azimut selected the lightweight 380HP (280kW) Quantum Series diesel because of what it describes as "decisive advantages in speed, fuel consumption, quietness and compactness."

Stefano Righini, exterior styling and concept designer at Azimut, wanted to accentuate the lifestyle quality of the new 40. That required maximising on-board space. The QSB5.9-380 is sufficiently compact to allow the boat's engine room to be located further aft, creating additional room in the interior cabins.

Azimut estimates that its 40 Flybridge equipped with the QSB diesels will cruise at 26 knots and produce a top speed of 30 knots. All of CMD's Quantum Series engines use the proven common rail fuel system, which improves economy, makes for cleaner starting, virtually eliminates smoke and associated odour, lowers emissions levels and has a marked reduction in noise.

Time on to plane is reduced dramatically compared with traditional mechanical engines, with a peak torque figure of 900lbs/ft at 2,000 rpm. CMD attributes this to a perfectly matched turbocharger, precise fuel injection and the new 24-valve cylinder head.

The QSB5.9-380, as per all new Quantum Series engines, has the option to use the SmartCraft multiplexing control and communications system. Transfer of information between the engine and vessel sensors to the helm is accomplished via datalink. This significantly reduces the amount of wiring needed in the engine room and at the helm. This facilitates ease of installation and increases electrical system reliability by reducing the number of terminals and wires that might corrode.

SmartCraft incorporates inputs from the engine and items such as fuel tank levels, GPS, steering, water depth and temperature. It constantly monitors engine performance, providing instant diagnostics and operational data at the helm.
