Coming Soon to the Cummins MerCruiser Diesel TDI engine series – SmartCraft instrumentation and EPA Tier 3 and IMO Tier II Certified

Charleston, S.C. – Early 2012 will bring about an exciting new change to the Cummins MerCruiser Diesel TDI® engine series. The 3.0L and the 4.2L TDI engines will be offered with SmartCraft instrumentation and will be EPA Tier 3 and IMO Tier II certified for the recreational market.

Currently the CMD-offered TDI engine series utilizes analog gauges. The new instrumentation package for the TDI Series will be offered with SmartCraft VesselView® LCD display and SmartCraft® digital instrumentation, providing a much more advanced, user-friendly monitoring of the propulsion system. The new instrumentation package will provide advanced details such as vessel speed, fuel and water tank levels, fuel flow, MPG, and drive trim and rudder angles, as well as engine voltage, temperature, oil pressure and RPM.

Also notable for early 2012 is the new emissions ratings for the TDI Series. The CMD TDI 3.0L and CMD TDI 4.2L will be EPA Tier 3 and IMO meeting or exceeding global emission requirements.  The New VW/Audi-based TDI 4.2L V8 and TDI 3.0L V6 will provide industry-leading fuel efficiency and horsepower-to-weight ratio. The twin Variable Turbine Geometry turbos on the V8 and the single VTG turbo on the V6 together with the upgraded TDI common-rail fuel system with Piezo fuel injectorsprovide astonishing fuel economy without sacrificing the performance you expect from a CMD propulsion system. Thanks to the excellent fuel consumption and emissions values, the TDI offers boating fun with a clear conscience.

For additional piece of mind, these engines are backed by one of the largest worldwide service networks, so wherever your adventures take you, CMD will be there for you. With more than 2,500 world-class service locations, your maintenance and service needs will be handled quickly by CMD professionals.

“The enhancements to the TDI engines are part of our ongoing strategy to seamlessly integrate the TDI Series into the CMD product portfolio and to make this technology available to boaters around the globe,” said Chris Wachowski, CMD Product Manager for Compact Diesels.  “These engines will change the way people think about diesel engines. Gone are the days of heavy, noisy and smoky diesels, with the next generation of TDI Series engines leading the industry with clean diesel power. Once you experience the unparalleled acceleration with no turbo lag, the automotive-like smooth, quiet propulsion system will leave you smiling all the way to the fuel station. We will be transitioning boat manufactures to the new TDI Series engines during the spring of 2012. Retail customers will have the opportunity to experience TDI technology in new and repowered boats by mid 2012.”
