CMD's Axius Propulsion System Brings Joystick Control to Sterndrive Boats

CHARLESTON, S.C. — With Axius®, docking a boat is child’s play.

Axius is a drive-by-wire sterndrive control system that features joystick operation for worry-free docking and slow-speed maneuvering. The system utilizes independently articulating sterndrives, and it allows even a novice captain to easily make intricate boat maneuvers, akin to that of a vessel powered by the Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Zeus® pod propulsion system. An Axius-equipped boat can be maneuvered laterally or at an angle and can spin inside its own length with the simple push or twist of the joystick. The system can also include an advanced integrated autopilot system and Skyhook®, a GPS-based system that uses vectored thrust to maintain a vessel’s heading and position, even in wind and current, with just the touch of a button.

The system comes in four different power nodes: 2 x QSD2.8 liter 220 hp, and 2 x QSD4.2 liter 270/320/350 hp. Axius is available in premium boats such as the Jeanneau Presige 38S, the Four Winns 338V, the MJM Yachts 40Z Downeast, the Sealine SC 35 and SC 38, as well as the Sea Ray 330 Sundancer and 350 Sundancer.

Axius was honored in January 2009 at the Dusseldorf International Boat Show with the first-ever Innovation Award given as part of the annual European Powerboat of the Year Awards, as judged by a panel of journalists from Europe’s leading boating magazines. The Skyhook feature offered by both Axius and Zeus was also similarly recognized in February 2009 with a Motor Boating Magazine Best of the Year Award.

The propulsion system will be featured at CMD’s on-water exhibit area at the Miami (Fla.) International Boat Show, with the QSD4.2-350-hp version installed in an MJM Yachts 40Z Downeast. The show runs Feb. 11-15 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and across the causeway at Miami’s Sea Isle Marina. The CMD slips are located at the base of Pier 1 at Sea Isle, its convention center location is booth M87.
