CMD Develops New Dry-Run Seawater Pump for Commercial and Government Use
CHARLESTON, S.C. — Cummins MerCruiser Diesel has developed a new seawater pump that allows QSB engines to run for up to 30 minutes at idle with the vessel completely out of the water.
The pump, which is a first in marine diesel propulsion, is designed for commercial and government applications where it is preferable to start and warm up the engine before the boat is launched. During the 30-minute run-dry period, the engine coolant temperature will stay well within the safe operating range, and neither engine nor pump will be damaged in any way. Vessels such as life boats, tenders and tactical military craft that may be transported on large ships may all benefit from this unique capability.
The Dry-Run pump is an optional replacement for the standard seawater pump on any member of CMD’s popular QSB5.9-liter engine family, which has eight power nodes from 230-480 mhp. The option is available immediately on new engine orders, and it can also be ordered as a service part for retrofitting engines already in service.
The pump is unique in that it retains a small reservoir of seawater when the engine is shut down. When the engine is restarted later with the boat out of the water, the pump lubricates and cools itself by recirculating that small volume of water until the vessel is launched, preventing damage to the impeller or housing.
